Which countries had the highest GDP growth rate in 1980-2021 — Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom or Germany?

Russia’s GDP growth rates have lagged behind key developed countries for many decades — from 1980 to 2021, the Russian economy grew by only 59% or 1.1% per year.

In same period the US economy grew by 188% (2.6% per year, that is 2.5 times faster than Russian rate the UK by 130%, and Germany by 90%.

Considering that the economies of developing countries (China’s GDP in 2021 is 37 times higher than in 1980, 9.2% per year) have grown faster than in developed countries in recent decades, Russia’s share in global value added has decreased.

In 2022, according to the IMF forecast, long-term trends of lagging behind the growth rates of the Russian economy from developed countries will continue.

The only decade when Russia’s GDP growth rate was higher than that of key Western countries was the 2000s (4.8% per year).
